The company behind Britain’s most famous film studio, Pinewood, is all set to open a new facility in Wales. According to reports, the company Pinewood Shepperton, which also own Shepperton Studios, will open the new 180,000 square foot studio in Cardiff. First Minister Carwyn Jones and Pinewood Shepperton chief executive Ivan Dunleavy released the news today which will apparently bring £90 million to the Welsh economy.

“Attracting such an iconic global brand as Pinewood is wonderful news for Wales,” Jones said.

“This high-profile investment is of significant economic value to Wales while the partnership between the Welsh government and Pinewood offers a priceless opportunity to promote Wales as a world-class location for film and television production.”

Around 1500 films have been shot at Pinewood and Shepperton over the 75 years that they’ve been operating, including all of the James Bond movies, including the last one, SKYFALL.

Actor Michael Sheen told the BBC:

“This is a logical next step, building upon the huge success of the revitalised Welsh entertainment industry,” he said.

“It’s always a precarious business to attempt such a large undertaking, but it points to the confidence, the expertise and the creative spirit of the people of Wales and I hope it can help the country come closer to realising its hopes for the future.”
