It’s been running around the rumour mill for a while now but today sees Variety confirming that Jai Courtney has been cast as Kyle Reese in the newest reboot – TERMINATOR: GENESIS.
The role was made famous by the brilliant, but often overlooked Michael Biehn, a favourite of director James Cameron. Kyle Reese is the soldier who is sent back through time to stop a robotic killing machine from assassinating the mother of the future saviour. We at THN love the original TERMINATOR and Kyle Reese even featured in our top alternative valentines recently; our passion for Cameron’s work leaves us somewhat dubious about the latest instalment to the series.
I myself am a huge fan of the original two films and am not sure about this casting choice. For me personally, Michael Biehn and Anton Yelchin’s ‘Reese’s’ were both wiry and athletic in build – which fits with the plot with Reese having grown-up starving and fighting for his life. From viewing previous films such as A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD Courtney is a lot more muscular and built which for me does not tally with the apocalyptic future vision. For me I think someone like Noah Segan would have been a lot more suited to the role – see LOOPER and BRICK for the proof.
Emilia Clarke of Game Of Thrones fame will follow in the footsteps of co-star Lena Headey and take on the role of Sarah Connor, made iconic by Linda Hamilton. ZERO DARK THIRTY’s Jason Clarke has signed-on to take over the mantle of John Connor, the man that Reese is trying to save by proxy.
Script details have yet to surface, but THOR: THE DARK WORLD’s Alan Taylor will direct the film which is tentatively set for a 2015.
