Matthew McConaughey is having a stunning time at the moment with stellar roles recently in DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, MUD and THE WOLF OF WALL STREET – he’s the man that’s hot property and has divulged a few words about his involvement in Christopher Nolan’s INTERSTELLAR – released in November. Obviously, he couldn’t talk about the plot but he did have this to say:
“Here’s what I can tell you…It’s the most ambitious thing he’s ever done. And he’s done some ambitious stuff.”
But it seems Nolan may have had him in mind before this project, and beneath the secrecy beyond secrecy – Did Nolan set this up a long time ago and how is he on-set?
“He came up to me and said, ‘“Mud.” I love that movie,’?” McConaughey then met up with him in LA at a later date, and revealed: “I sat down with him for about 2½ hours at his house. Not one word came up about Interstellar. I walked out not sure what to think. I mean, he’s not a guy who takes general meetings.”
He continued:
“There’s no fucking around on set. He’s a great problem solver. In that way, he’s very indie. Here’s a guy who could have whatever budget he wants — and we finished shooting early.”
It does seems that wasn’t any old general meeting, Christopher Nolan had this to say about the Texas star:
“Matthew works from the inside out. He approaches a character from a deep human understanding, refusing to take shortcuts to an emotional connection with the audience — all while never losing sight of the demands of the overall narrative.”
I’m very excited to see what Nolan has come up with this time. We know it involves space-travel and something to do with a black hole, but where he’ll go beyond there is just the beginning of a whole set of intrigue. I’ve been a fan of his for years right from MEMENTO and he’s never failed to excite and raise the bar on (and in) film – or the explorations of possibility within it.
Last weekend also saw Nolan attend and accept an award at the Academy’s Scientific & Technical Awards. They’re the ones that celebrate all the people behind the camera and he accepted a Merit Award that honoured “all those who built and operated film laboratories, for over a century of service to the motion picture industry.” If you wanted to catch his speech, head over to ThePlaylist.
