Although I doubt that many of you are clamouring for another instalment in the RESIDENT EVIL series, the franchise is seemingly as undefeatable as its undead antagonists. The fifth and most recent film in the franchise RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION, was a hit at the worldwide box office and made $240 Million on a $65 Million budget. This quickly lead to Sony green lighting a sixth film in the incredibly lucrative series based on the video games from Capcom.
With an official release date of September 12th 2014 and virtually no updates since its announcement, it was beginning to look very very unlikely that Milla Jovovich would be back to the zombie-killing action so soon. Now series writer and director Paul W.S. Anderson (DEATH RACE, THE THREE MUSKETEERS) has given an update on the currently untitled RESIDENT EVIL 6 whilst promoting his new film POMPEII. You can read what Anderson had to say below:
‘We’d like to do another Resident Evil movie. Definitely. But the wheels aren’t quite in motion yet’.
With Milla Jovovich signed on to reprise her role as Alice and Sony eager to get the next film into theatres, its likely that Anderson will begin work on the script soon for a September 2015 release. Anderson has also stated on many occasions that the sixth RESIDENT EVIL film would be his last before an inevitable reboot, so expect the film to complete the current storyline began by the original film in 2002. Despite the fact that the films have been ridiculed since they began over a decade ago, I actually thoroughly enjoy them as immense guilty pleasures. After all can anyone really deny the enjoyment of Milla Jovovich running around in tight leather and killing zombies in increasingly ludicrous manners usually consisting of summersaults, machine guns and explosions. The plots have become more and more bizarre throughout the franchise but I wouldn’t feel satisfied without a proper conclusion, especially after the killer cliffhanger left from the last film…
