Indie Sci-Fi ‘The Signal’ & ‘Snowpiercer’ To Hit This Summer

The SignalGoing up against the big boys are we? Indie sci-fi THE SIGNAL, which screened at The Sundance Film Festival, follows a group of three friends who take a detour during a journey only for everything to suddenly go dark. The film has received many positive reviews and has set a limited release for 13th June, with further expansions in the weeks following that date. THE SIGNAL stars Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Beau Knapp and Laurence Fishburne.

Meanwhile, Bong Joon Ho’s much awaited SNOWPIERCER, which like a typical train will be running nearly a year late, has finally set a North American release date. It should be hitting cinemas on 27th June as a limited release with a possible, but as yet unconfirmed, same day VOD release. The film has been delayed for a long time and has already been released in some parts of Europe and Asia. SNOWPIERCER sees the last of humanity having to constantly travel on a train after a new ice age arrives. The all-star cast includes Chris Evans, Ed Harris, Jamie Bell, Song Kang Ho, Octavia Spencer, John Hurt, and Tilda Swinton.

Two excellent looking sci-fi offerings then, which look to be the antidote to the usual blockbusters we’re force fed. However, even the blockbusters look particularly fantastic this year so you can bet we’ll be spoiled for choice.
