THE HUNGER GAMES are really catching fire! Not only has the second installment of the HUNGER GAMES franchise grossed $424 million at the North American theatrical box office, making it the tenth highest-grossing domestic release of all time, Lionsgate has now announced that THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE DVD and Blu-ray release (Check out our review here) had the biggest digital launch in the company’s history.
The opening sales sold an estimate 3.9 million of DVDs and Blu-rays, while the digital sales of the film increased for 40% compared to the first HUNGER GAMES movie. CATCHING FIRE opened as number 1 on all major digital platforms, including iTunes, Xbox, Amazon, Vudu, Comcast Xfinity, Verizon FiOS, Google Play and Sony Entertainment Network.
Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate President and General Manager of Home Entertianment Sales & Distribution said,
“This is a monster opening and a tremendous result for the second film in a franchise, underscoring the enourmous momentum of THE HUNGER GAMES’ films. Opening weekend packaged media sales of CATCHING FIRE were comparable to the first HUNGER GAMES title released nearly two years ago while digital sales grew by nearly 40%. With strong increases in digital revenue and Blu-ray accounting for nearly 50% of packaged media sales, the opening weekend performance is driving significant margin growth and is a testament to the strength of the franchise.”
This home entertainment success only adds to the whole list of records already broken by the film franchise, including the first occasion that the first two films of a franchise grossed more than $400 million at the domestic box office. And with two more installments on the way, who knows how far THE HUNGER GAMES are going to go.
THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PARTS 1 & 2 are set to be released on November 21, 2014 and November 20, 2015 – Bring it on!
