Spader Is ‘Unbelievable’ As Ultron Claims Feige

ultronWith so many heroes being crammed into AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, it’s easy to forget that it’s the villain slapped into the title. It’s also easy to forget that it isn’t the villain teased at the end of THE AVENGERS. James Spader is on vocal duties for the sequel’s prime antagonist, but as far as his origins go we’re yet to see what Marvel have come up with as it certainly wont be his original backstory in which he was created by Hank Pym (ANT-MAN). Although he’s not yet confirmed where they’re coming from in terms of story, Kevin Feige has dropped some tasty hints as to James Spader’s performance at a press junket for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER.

I think people are going to very, very excited to see what we’re doing with the voice that Joss [Whedon] is bringing to life with James Spader for Ultron… We want him to have an extreme personality and attitude, and James Spader is doing an unbelievable job. Again, for us it’s always about subverting expectations. Whenever you think you know what’s coming next, we surprise people or deliver it in a slightly unexpected way. And Spader is doing that with Mr. Ultron.

I’ve always loved Spader as an actor, with STARGATE being one of the films to get me into films and WOLF being a film I think is very underrated. Although a lot of Spader’s skills come from his mannerisms, his voice has always had a disconnected and unnerving edge to it. Fingers crossed that CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY keep the Marvel train running.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is released on 1st May 2015. It stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, James Spader, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, and Thomas Kretschmann.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
