Hold ‘The Grudge’: Raimi Attached To J-Horror Reboot

A mere ten years after Takashi Shimizu’s Japanese horror JU-ON: THE GRUDGE was re-crafted for Western audiences (same director, but with added Sarah Michelle Gellar-ness), we’ve just learnt that another reboot is already on the way.

Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe are relaunching the franchise, with a script from the pen of MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN writer Jeff Buhler. Horror maestro Sam Raimi is attached as producer, along with Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise.

2004’s THE GRUDGE was a box office smash; it only cost $10 million to make, but grossed $187 million worldwide, spawning two sequels. The story follows, well, a grudge, but a really really nasty one. Once you’re cursed there’s no escape, and the curse just grows and grows, spiralling from person to person, spreading its web of evil – but in lanky-haired human form.

So perhaps it’s no wonder there’s another version on the way so soon. I guess it’s a case of life imitating art, or *cough* running out of ideas *cough*. I guess we’ll just have to wait to find out.

When not doing either of these things she can usually be found polishing her Star Trek DVD boxsets. And when she can actually be bothered she writes fiction and poetry that pops up on the web and in print. Her favourite film in the whole world, ever, is BLADE RUNNER.
