Is there a finer actress around these days than Meryl Streep? The woman oozes class and brings a gravitas to every film she’s a part of. Gravitas may not be something that’s needed for the latest role she’s signed on for though; an indie comedy drama from JUNO scribe Diablo Cody entitled RICKY AND THE FLASH.
Very little is known about the project just yet, it doesn’t have distributor backing as present, but a basic storyline has been revealed. Streep will play an ageing rock-star (she proved her pipes in MAMMA MIA) who tries to reconnect with her family when one of her children is faced with an ugly divorce.
Jonathan Demme, diretor of not-so comedic movies including SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, PHILADELPHIA and RACHEL GETTING MARRIED is set to direct and Marc Platt, currently working alongside Streep as a producer on INTO THE WOODS will be lending a helping hand as a producer.
With a script from Diablo Cody audiences can probably expect a movie that’s off-beat, clever and full of one-liners, much like her breakout script JUNO. She followed her hit up with comedy horror JENNIFER’S BODY and smart drama YOUNG ADULT, the first and last of which featured strong unique female characters at which Cody seems to excel writing. Her latest film, 2013’s PARADISE, which was also her directorial debut, failed to set alight the critics or the box office so it looks like she’s gone back to basics by sticking to the writing for RICKY AND THE FLASH.
We’re looking forward to receiving more news on this project as it gets closer to production. After such strong performances playing Streep’s children in AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY from Julia Roberts, Julianne Nicholson and Juliette Lewis who will take up the gauntlet next?
