We haven’t even seen Michael Bay’s latest explosion-filled outing yet, but it seems that Paramount are already looking to the future of their prized TRANSFORMERS franchise. After the first three films in Hasbro’s toy-based series grossed over $2.5 Billion worldwide, no one was expecting Optimus Prime and co. pack up their guns and call it a day.
As a result Michael Bay returned to direct the upcoming fourth instalment in the franchise titled TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTICTION, which will act a semi-reboot with an entirely new cast consisting of Mark Wahlberg, Kelsey Grammer and Stanley Tucci. Now at a Hasbro licensing event, the company behind our favourite Autobots have revealed plans for an upcoming fifth film in the enormously lucrative series. Amongst a few logos for forthcoming animated TRANSFORMERS features, an early placeholder design for a fifth live action film reveals an apparent release date set for the second quarter of 2017. Obviously this could change depending on how TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION performs at the box office, but lets be honest it’s incredibly unlikely that this one will under-perform after the previous three films, after all TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON is the sixth highest grossing film of all time!. It will be interesting to see how audiences respond to a distinctly Shia Labeouf-less TRANSFORMERS sequel, but Mark Wahlberg has more than proven his box office power over the past few years. Although the series has its critics, I have always been very vocal of my love for the original 2007 film which holds a very special place in my heart. Despite the fact that the second film was a poorly written piece of cinema to say the least, I am also quite fond of the third entry which arguably showed alien mass destruction on a larger scale than we had ever seen previously (before THE AVENGERS that is). Expect to see TRANSFORMERS: *INSERT SUBTITLE HERE in theatres sometime around June 2017 or possibly even earlier than that.
TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION will hit UK theatres on 10th July. The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Kelsey Grammer, Stanley Tucci, Nicola Peltz, Sophia Myles, Jack Reynor, Bingbing Li and Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime.
