While the general consensus at the moment seems to be ‘Marvel yay, DC nay’ as far as superhero movies are concerned, it’s important to remember that Warner Bros and DC do have something to show for their superhero catalogue. Granted, it’s mostly Batman, but it’s also a case of quality over quantity – while Marvel churn out endless films from here to eternity, not one has matched the sheer brilliance of Nolan’s DARK KNIGHT trilogy.
And then there’s Arrow, The Flash, Gotham and of course, the upcoming BATMAN VS SUPERMAN. The question on everyone’s lips by this point is: will they all exist in the same universe? IGN asked MAN OF STEEL screenwriter David S. Goyer that very question, and this is what he had to say about the DC Cinematic Universe:
I mean, it’s too early. I know that Warner Bros. would love to make their universe more cohesive. There have been a lot of general conversations about that, but it’s really, really early. I’m not sure. Marvel has had enormous success, but I’m not sure that everybody should try to emulate them either. It’s just been vague conversations so far.
This is obviously frustrating to fans; Arrow is hugely popular, and it’s looking likely that The Flash and Gotham will follow suit, so why not tie them all into the same universe? Obviously this will be easier with Arrow and The Flash as they’ll be able to transfer directly to the silver screen, where Gotham is all tied up with prequel stuff, but who’s to say even that couldn’t plant a few seeds that foreshadow, say, a JUSTICE LEAGUE film?
He does go on to say that they have a story in mind, whatever that may be – though they don’t pay too much attention to what Fox are doing with X-MEN or Sony with the SPIDER-MAN universe:
There’s just our approach to how we want to tell a story, and hopefully we can convince Warner Bros. or whatnot of that. We don’t sit in a room with cigars and say, “Look at what these guys are doing!” It doesn’t work that way. I don’t know.
Of course, Goyer’s right in saying that emulation of Marvel’s model is not for everybody, particularly with the rate at which they’re bringing out films – ‘Marvel fatigue’ is probably a medical condition by this point – but it does seem like a natural fit for the franchise. With rumours of BATMAN VS SUPERMAN shooting back-to-back with a JUSTICE LEAGUE film, here’s hoping Goyer’s just playing coy and Warner are about to unleash the next great superhero showdown.
