Karen Gillan-Starring ‘Oculus’ Opens High At US Box Office

It was always likely to be the underdog against the colourful spectacles of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and RIO 2, but Mike Flanagan’s maniacal mirror flick OCULUS has entered the US box office chart in a respectable third place.

Praised by no less a horrormeister than Stephen King and garnering generally strong reviews, the film is also the American feature debut of former TARDIS traveller Karen Gillan, who plays one half of a pair of siblings whose lives were torn apart by the eponymous antique of the title.

With initial takings of $12 million, down on PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES but up on DARK SKIES from the same stable, commentators aren’t sure whether audiences are going to make their latest offering the new INSIDIOUS. But with an intriguing psychological premise, a leading lady with a profile rising faster than yeast in an Aga and a feted director at the outset of his career, OCULUS could well reflect a positive trend in a market saturated with gore.

OCULUS is directed by Mike Flanagan and stars Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites and Katee Sackhoff. It has yet to be given a UK release date.
