‘Barbie’ Headed For The Big Screen

Barbie The Movie

She’s made some ironic appearances in the TOY STORY franchise and her image has been satirized by everyone from The Simpsons to LEGALLY BLONDE. But now Mattel’s legendary doll is to make her proper Hollywood debut in a live action movie from Sony Pictures.

Boasting no less a combination than powerhouse production partnership Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald (GLADIATOR, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN) and with a script by Jenny Bicks (The Big C) it seems this is a project with some weight behind it. With the success of THE LEGO MOVIE toy lines are now a more serious proposition for the studios than ever before. Mattel has even announced it is having another stab at a MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE film, decades after Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella inadvertently ordered nails for their career coffins as He-Man and Skeletor.

The story of BARBIE THE MOVIE reflects these makeover-obsessed times, as explained here:

It allows the character Barbie to use her personal and professional skills to step into the lives of others and improve them, almost like a modern-day Mary Poppins.

This sounds like it could either be a sharp and sassy comedy or a dolly-shifting exercize of the murkiest water. Either way, the answer will remain vacuum sealed until the packaging can be opened at cinemas soon.
