It seems fitting that the FRIDAY THE 13TH franchise is just as resilient as its undead antagonist Jason Voorhees. After 11 films, one reboot and a further instalment on the way, it appears as if fans of the cursed Camp Crystal Lake are in for more gruesome murders with a brand new television series too.
Earlier this month it was announced that the newest FRIDAY THE 13TH reboot had found its director in the form of David Bruckner (V/H/S, THE SIGNAL), with a release date set for Friday the 13th March 2015. Now it has been revealed that original 1980 FRIDAY THE 13TH director Sean S. Cunningham, has signed up to executive produce a new hour long drama series revolving around the hockey masked-killer. The series from Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films and Crystal Lake Entertainment, will be written by Bill Basso (TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY) and Jordu Schell (AVATAR) in a story that will ‘re-imagine Jason in multiple time periods’.
You can read what Cunningham had to say about the upcoming series below:
‘Jason Voorhees is synonymous with the genre and we plan to build on this legacy with a provocative and compelling take that expands upon the storylines that have already thrilled millions worldwide’.
Horror Inc. president and producer of the series Robert Barsamian also gave away some details on the series, which you can read below:
‘Expect the show to take viewers in some exciting new directions that we’re confident will not only excite existing fans of Friday The 13th but also attract new audiences to the situations and characters that inhabit the small town of Crystal Lake’.
I wouldn’t expect too much from this series but there’s no harm in watching a few promiscuous teens get slaughtered occasionally, and it can only be a good thing having Cunningham on board. Saying that I am a huge horror fan and I did actually enjoy the 2009 reboot so who knows, maybe this new television series will surprise us all. Hopefully Friday The 13th:The Series will be an entertaining weekly watch with some interesting new layers added to the already-bizarre Jason Voorhees character.
