The return of the Channel 4 news team was inevitable after the first ANCHORMAN film became such a cult classic. In ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES Ron (Will Ferrell) and Veronica (Christina Applegate) have hit the big time – that is until Ron is fired and forced to take a job at a brave new 24-hours news channel. He must reassemble the news team and get the ratings he needs to beat Jack Lime (James Marsden) in order to get back on top of the news.
There are rivalries, romances and a dramatic rise and fall for the classy Burgundy. In true ANCHORMAN fashion, there are also numerous cameos and running gags to enjoy and for fans of the first film, there is even a reprisal of the hilarious fight sequence which will, of course, escalate quickly.
This second outing is, perhaps unsurprisingly, not as consistently funny and full of one-liners as the first outing – there’s no way this film will be nearly as quoted as the first. However, when it is funny, it’s positively hilarious. The film dances along the line between ridiculously funny and just plain ridiculous but the sense of humour from the first film is still there – with all of Ron Burgundy’s wildly inappropriate behaviour turned up a notch to include racism as well as his infamous sexism.
I don’t love ANCHORMAN 2 quite as much as I love lamp but it’s certainly well worth a watch.
Extras:
As expected, there are lots of extras available here including a gag reel and extended versions of scenes from the film itself. There is also an audio commentary with Adam McKay, Judd Apatow, Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner which is basically just the entire group mocking everyone they see on screen. They often go off on massive tangents and just keep going. They say so many things that are clearly made up, but if anything is actually true it’s hard to tell.
