The hotly anticipated summer Blockbuster season has barely started, and we are already beginning to see some big numbers from a couple of early releases. It seems like tradition now that the summer is kick-started by an adrenaline-fueled superhero film (usually) baring that all-familiar red and white Marvel banner. This year Marvel has (so far) continued to capitalise on the immense popularity the studio has maintained since the release of 2012’s gargantuan AVENGERS, with the mighty CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and Sony’s brilliant THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2.
Now we have an update on the worldwide and North American box office, including news on how much financial profit Marvel and Sony have hoovered up thus far with their mega superhero blockbusters. Although THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 has yet to be released in Peter Parkers own native country, the film is already doing some amazing (pun intended) business over here in the UK and in some other international territories. Sony’s fifth film based on the famous wall-crawler is said to have already accumulated $132 Million worldwide in just over a week of release. Looks like things are looking positive for the already-planned third AMAZING SPIDER-MAN instalment and subsequent SINISTER SIX/VEMON spin-off’s.
Nick Cassavetes’ THE OTHER WOMEN may not have garnered the most positive reviews from critics, but the film is certainly performing extremely financially well in its opening weekend. As Cameron Diaz proves once again that she is still a powerhouse box office draw, the trio-paring of the BAD TEACHER star with Kate Upton and Leslie Mann has opened very strong indeed. It is being reported that THE OTHER WOMEN has de-throned CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER after its three week reign at the number one spot in North America. The comedy has opened with $20.6 Million in the US and an early worldwide total of $45.3 Million worldwide, which has covered its entire budget in one weekend!
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SODIER has finally moved to the number two spot in the US box office, however that definitely hasn’t put much of a dent in its huge worldwide gross so far! The Marvel sequel is currently the highest grossing film of 2014 and also the highest April release ever in North America. If that wasn’t enough the film is also Marvel Studios’ third highest grossing film ever after THE AVENGERS and IRON MAN 3 with a whopping $645.2 Million worldwide, which is sure to rise to $700 Million in the coming days for a huge finishing total. Meanwhile Randall Wallace’ HEAVEN IS FOR REAL starring Greg Kinnear, hit the third spot in its second week of release for a domestic US total of $51.9 Million. 20th Century Fox’ animated family sequel RIO 2 is currently at the fourth spot with a worldwide total of $346.2 Million, and Paul Walker’s final (completed) film BRICK MANSIONS sadly failed to make an impact with a fifth box office spot of $9.6 Million.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” (2012) opened in foreign markets to $51 million and a $490 Million total. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” opened in many markets to $46 million, in most comparable markets its DOWN. There are a couple of exceptions (Germany) but the trend is down about 12.5%, not a good sign.
The pre-release projects had “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” at roughly equal to slightly below the original “Amazing Spider-Man” total. Today that trend is to put it between $425 and $450 in foreign box office totals, far from Amazing wouldn’t you say considering “Spider-Man 2” (2004) did $410 without adjusting for inflation.
