It is with a heavy heart that THN must bring you the news that actor Bob Hoskins has passed away, aged 71. His agent broke the news earlier today confirming that the actor died last night after having recently contracted pneumonia. His family were with him at the time and stated that he died peacefully, they have asked that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.
Hoskins had a lengthy career in the world of acting, he started on stage before branching out into television before making the move to films. The actor was nominated for the best actor Oscar in 1987 for his part in MONA LISA, and is most famous for his role in THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY, HOOK, and of course WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT.
Not every film was a critical success with SUPER MARIO BROS., which also starred Dennis Hopper and John Leguizamo, taking a critical pounding upon release. The film has however managed to gain a cult following with the film beloved by many children of the nineties as a guilty pleasure. Other notable roles included his turns in MERMAIDS, and DOOMSDAY.
His last on-screen job was SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN which had Hoskins as one of the dwarves, Muir. Shortly after completing filming it was announced that he would be retiring from the acting world due to him being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to the friends and family of Bob Hoskins, a true British treasure.
