British star Eddie Redmayne has signed on to play Danish artist Einar Wegener in an upcoming biopic.
Redmayne will team up with his LES MISERABLES director Tom Hooper in a film inspired by the hit novel of the same name written by David Ebershoff.
The film is based on the true story of Danish painter Einar Wegener and his wife Gerda. Wegener was one of the first men to undergo a series of operations to become a woman in 1930. The film will follow the harrowing journey the couple take until Einar becomes Lilli and her life thereafter.
This will be a rather challenging role for Redmayne who has earned his chops in period pieces such as THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL and television mini-series THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH and TESS OF THE D’URBERVILLES. Redmayne has not long finished filming the THEORY OF EVERYTHING in which he played famous physicist Stephen Hawking, so he should be well versed in playing complex characters.
