2016 sees the second film in James Cameron’s AVATAR series released. The first, released in 2009, amassed a ridiculous amount of money though divided viewers who either loved it or hated it. The main reason for the negative reactions was that the plot was very basic; it was simply POCAHONTAS/FERNGULLY in space. Cameron however fell in love with his creation planet Pandora and is currently working on not one, but three follow-up films. Hopefully the brain behind some of the best sequels in film history, ALIENS and TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY can dream up a more compelling story than the first venture.
Fans were extremely excited by the prospect of AVATAR especially when they found out that old leading lady Sigourney Weaver would make an appearance. Weaver’s role was Grace, a Doctor who was studying the Na’vi, the indigenous intelligent life of Pandora. She acted as a guide for Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully helping open his eyes to the beauty of the world around him. Unfortunately for fans of Ripley as Grace suffered a tragic death during the second half of the film.
Despite her apparent death though it has been revealed that Weaver will return for the sequels alongside Worthington, Saldana (who will turn from her current green back to blue) and Stephen Lang, another character thought deceased at the end of AVATAR. Vulture.com spoke to the iconic actress about the films, asking how excited she was and how we could expect to see her character back. Here’s what she had to say:
It’s going to be an adventure! It will be awesome. I can’t even imagine what I am taking on — and what James Cameron is taking on — with filming three Avatars at once, but … Peter Jackson did it with the Hobbit films, so we have that to look to. It will be challenging for me. I can’t talk about it, but my part is a little different in each one. I’ll transform somewhat.
During her death Grace was connected to the tree of life so might that have something to do with her return? Or might she simply appear in the traditional flashback/dream sequence set-up?
As discussed by Weaver the three sequels are to be filmed back-to-back LORD OF THE RINGS style with the first film imaginatively titled AVATAR 2 for the moment due for a December 2016 release.
