Exclusive: Joe Dempsie Talks ‘Monsters: Dark Continent’

Last night saw the BAFTA Television awards take place and while we were there, we had the chance to chat to rising British actor and ex-Skins (and Cineworld) alumni Joe Dempsie.

Dempsie was one of the stars of Southcliffe, the fantastic series that dealt with a small town’s reaction to a tragic shooting which saw Sean Harris bag the BAFTA for best actor. The star was also presenting the award for Best Single Drama, something which he confided he was exceptionally nervous for.

We asked the Nottingham raised actor about a potential return for his popular character of Gendry in HBO’s fantastic Game of Thrones to which he cryptically remarked that Game of Thrones doesn’t leave loose ends. Technically his character is the legal heir to the throne so fingers crossed the boat he was last seen on docks and Gendry will really jump into the mix.

Dempsie’s next project is MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT, a semi-sequel to GODZILLA-director Gareth Edwards’ debut film MONSTERS. The teaser trailer was unveiled earlier this week, with Dempsie sharing that it was the first time the cast themselves had seen any footage from the film. When asked how closely it follows the original he had the following to say:

Well it’s in the same world but this is a whole different story. I play a soldier who is sent into the infected zone as part of a rescue mission. These men are really terrified of what they are about to face. With regard to the monsters they are in it a lot more than the Gareth Edwards film but it’s still really a story about this group of characters and the situation they find themselves in. I always liked that the monsters were sort of more metaphorical than anything else and that’s the same.

MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT is released in September.
