‘Godzilla’ Passes $200 Million Worlwide

Godzilla ImageEarlier this week we reported how GODZILLA was the biggest worldwide opener of the year, and just 4 1/2 days after its release, it had accumulated $200 million. After making $90 million + in the US alone in its opening weekend, it was already announced that a sequel was in development. The film had estimates suggesting it would only make just north of $70 million, proving that GODZILLA is perhaps more popular than first expected. In only two territories did GODZILLA fail to claim the No. 1 spot. Austria saw NEIGHBORS (or BAD NEIGHBOURS as it’s known in the UK) take pole position, while South Korea favoured its own OBSESSION.

Despite the big numbers, GODZILLA can expect a hefty drop this weekend, as X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is set for release. X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST has some estimates hinting towards a $100 million opening in the US alone, and since it’s opening in 100 countries this weekend, the box office take should be massive. It may not all be bad news for GODZILLA though, as it certainly offers a big blockbuster film without superheroes, and since X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is the third superhero outing this year, some people may still be aching for big monster madness.

Last year’s similarly themed PACIFIC RIM opened to just $37 million in its opening weekend and went on to score $400 million + during its run worldwide. With half of that taken in a week, Godzilla can expect to return in the near future. I hope!
