Earlier this month the internet was hit with the fantastic news that the Power Rangers will be returning to the big screen. The twenty one year old superhero franchise became a cultural phenomenon in the early nineties before two films were released in 1995 and 1997. Although the children’s television show is still running (under the re-acquired guidance of series creator Haim Saban), it hardly receives the appreciation and attention it once did.
With Power Rangers celebrating its twentieth anniversary last year, Saban took the occasion as a great opportunity to promote the brand on a much larger scale than anyone had seen in a long time. This marketing included the re-branding of old products including toys and home media, which appealed to both newcomers and aging nostalgia freaks of the nineties (like myself). On top of that the newest iteration of the show Power Rangers Super Megaforce, received quite a large amount of attention due to its upcoming anniversary episode which brings back legendary rangers from the past including Jason David Frank and Alison MacInnis.
With Lionsgate signing on to produce the film, it is expected that this new cinematic offering of multi-coloured, martial arts action from the powerhouse studio, will emulate previous hits such as THE HUNGER GAMES, TWILIGHT and THE EXPENDABLES. Now a new report claims that CHRONICLE screenwriter Max Landis is working on the script for the upcoming big screen Power Rangers reboot. You can read the report below:
‘The Phantom dropped by to give me this scoop. According to The Phantom’s sources close to the production, CHRONICLE writer Max Landis is currently writing the script. In fact, he’s just turned in a draft to producers Jim Miller and Alison Shearmur and Haim Saban’.
CHRONICLE was an excellent reinvention of the superhero genre that displayed a grounded take on the established formula with relatable characters, stunning visuals and a gritty, realistic tone. Landis would therefore be a perfect choice as screenwriter on the Power Rangers reboot due to the similarities between both franchises. While Power Rangers tells the story of five teenagers gifted with extraordinary powers and abilities in order to fight crime and save the world, CHRONICLE told essentially the same basic story but with a more grounded and realistic approach. Let’s hope this proves to be accurate, after all a big screen Power Rangers reboot with the spirit of THE HUNGER GAMES and the tone of CHRONICLE could be an absolutely cracking reinterpretation of the brand. Also would it be too much to ask for cameos from some former cast members?

We will just have to see if the Power Rangers will be as appealing as the Hunger Games since it’s the only franchise I’m interested in from Lionsgate at this time. It would be exciting if they got past rangers for cameos. I have heard of Chronicle but i have not seen it before so i have no opinion on the screenwriter
