Ah, what is there to live for in a world without emotion? Well, we’re blessed to find out in this brand new trailer for THE GIVER, an upcoming dystopian future-esque science-fiction drama… with what I assume is an underlying romance? It’s from SALT director Phillip Noyce and is the first big film he’s done since, so a good four-year stint.
THE GIVER is based on the 1993 novel of same name by Lois Lowry and the title, I assume is in reference to some sort of revelation, i.e. the giver of truth, knowledge, perspective, and any number of things by the looks of the trailer. In it, we can see the wonderful Jeff Bridges (come on, he needs no introduction), and that of MALEFICENT’s Brenton Thwaites, who is selected as the new ‘Giver.’ Plot synopsis as according to IMDB as follows:
In a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences or choice, a young boy is chosen to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the “real” world.
In all honesty, it seems to be the first teen-dystopian film to emerge since THE HUNGER GAMES that looks to be particularly worthwhile, DIVERGENT just didn’t do it for some folks. Especially so considering it’s backed by one of the better soundtracks to come out of cinema history. Check it out!
If you like this type of film, you’ll probably love THE MAZE RUNNER coming out later this year too. Got any film recommendations for us? Are you starting to get sick of the dystopian stories? Tell us what you think below!
Directed by Phillip Noyce, THE GIVER also stars Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgard, Katie Holmes, Taylor Swift, Cameron Monaghan, and Odeya Rush. It is scheduled to be released in the US on August 15, 2014. However, no release date for UK cinemas has yet been set.
