THE LEGO MOVIE is by far one of the best films of the year. It’s certainly one of the only 2014 releases I’ve managed to see twice so far, but there were a few characters who were noticeably absent from the film. Those characters were of course the superheroes over at Marvel. Despite being a Warner Bros. film and obviously wanting to push their own brand of comic heroes in the form of the DC bunch (a much better group name than The Justice League if you ask me), the film also had room for franchise rivals in the form of characters from STAR WARS, LORD OF THE RINGS, HARRY POTTER, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES and THE SIMPSONS. Although most characters had to settle for fleeting cameos, it was still great to see such a mixture of fictional icons.
They may have had their own Lego based video game, but it seemed as though the boys over at Marvel weren’t invited to the party or just set fire to their invitation at the thought of a feature film based on a toy. The guys over at ComingSoon were able to ask THE LEGO MOVIE’s directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller about the odds of Marvel showing up in a sequel and the two didn’t seem so certain, stating that:
Marvel seems to be doing fine on their own. It’s really hard to convince a company, especially business affairs, to do something, because it would be cool or fun. It takes a lot of effort.
It would certainly be a nice gesture, but if it ends up with the guys having to jump through hoops to accommodate the wishes of Marvel, then probably just leave it. After all, it really would be their loss.
