James Cameron has gone on record stating that Sigourney Weaver will return for all three AVATAR sequels. Weaver played scientist/doctor Grace in the first film, who helped guide Sam Worthington’s protagonist through the bizarre world of waking up in an alien body. Weaver will rejoin cast mates Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Stephen Lang, who all reprise their respective roles. Cameron said of Weaver’s return:
Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made ‘Aliens.’ We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together, so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the ‘Avatar’ sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration.
Characters coming back from the dead? Sounds like we’re going into some strange territory. Although sometimes characters coming back from the dead can work, it can also remove some of the excitement and tension from films.
The three AVATAR sequels are being filmed back-to-back with the first one set for release inDecember 2016 and the second and third sequels following in consecutive years.
I have never really taken to AVATAR, but as the highest grossing film of all-time, I’m sure there’ll be plenty of fans ready to return to Pandora.

“Character’s (sic) coming back from the dead?” Did you somehow miss the part where Cameron says she’s playing a different character?
