It was only a few weeks ago that Pixar finally gave us a little more insight into their new animation INSIDE OUT, and yesterday the director offered more background into this stunning-sounding film at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France.
As director Pete Docter spoke to a room full of fellow professional animators and fans-alike, he revealed more regarding the characters who are – quite literally – Fear, Sadness, Joy, Disgust and Anger but also gave us an amazing insight into where the inspiration came from. For those who don’t know, the film centres around those emotions inside the brain of a young girl called Riley Anderson.
We already knew it was a much more personal film and it seems this one comes from Docter watching his own daughter in real-life growing up, he had this to say:
“It’s based on a strong emotional experience I had watching my daughter grow up.There is something that is lost when you grow up.”
He also revealed that Riley isn’t just a young girl, she’s more of a place for the story to revolve around:
“[Riley is] one of those kids who seems like she was born happy,in truth, Riley is not our main character; she is our setting.”
It’s a brave decision to delve into the mind of anyone but a kid will surely resonate with everyone from the younger audience, right through to parents who see the changes themselves. I expect another UP-like emotional rollercoaster at some point and that’s what Pixar really do best.
They also showed the appreciative crowd the first five minutes of INSIDE OUT, and if you wanted to hear what they saw, the head over to Variety by clicking here for a much more in-depth look at what to expect – It sounds inspiring, original and quite, quite brilliant.
INSIDE OUT opens in 2015 and stars the voices of… Fear (Bill Hader), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Joy (Amy Poehler), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Anger (Lewis Black) – How good will all those voices to be those characters!?
