It has been announced that the first stand alone movie in the STAR WARS franchise, which will be directed by GODZILLA helmer Gareth Edwards, will shoot in the UK at the famous Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire. The news was announced on the set of STAR WARS EPISODE VII last night by the Chancellor George Osbourne and Britain’s Culture Secretary Sajid Javid.

Osbourne said: “Lucasfilm and Disney’s decision to shoot the Star Wars standalone movie in the UK is testament to the incredible talent in Britain.”

“This will mean more jobs and more investment. It is great news for people working at Pinewood Studios, from the set designers to the carpenters.”

“As Chancellor I have been determined that we back our brilliant creative industries which is why we have invested in skills and training as well as providing tax relief for films, high-end TV, animation, video games and regional theatre.” He added.

The first film, set away from the main franchise, will shoot at Pinewood next year for a 2016 release. The plan is to release a stand alone story every two years, with an official episode from the famous franchise released in the years in between.
