Out among the deserted Earth-films lies a newcomer that’s in the shape of Jake Paltrow’s debut YOUNG ONES.
Set in the near future where water has all but disappeared, it’s now the most precious resource on the planet and one that leads the way in everything from politics to relationships and without water ‘How can anything grow?‘ both literally and figuratively. With only tough survivors struggling to survive, we join Ernest Holm (Michael Shannon) who lives in this dusty world with his children, Jerome (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and Mary (Elle Fanning). Although Holm can fight off everyone else trying to steal what he’s got left, what happens when Mary’s boyfriend Flem (Nicolas Hoult) wants Ernest’s land for himself?
These two teaser trailers set us up for another broken dystopia narrative but it looks sweltering with the additional of some working robots, mixing up the likes of DISTRICT 9 but set in the desert – with less people. It also boasts an impressive cast with Shannon, Hoult, Smit-McPhee and Elle Fanning joining Paltrow’s first big screen outing. He also wrote the screenplay and, for those wondering, is the younger brother of Gwyneth. The fact he’s now directing just reminds me that I’m getting old – especially with all the young Coppola’s making movies now as well but…anyway…
Check out these teasers below, scroll down for stills – and most importantly – let us know what you think below! (NB: We’re waiting on better quality for one trailer!)
YOUNG ONES is released in the States in October, we’d expect a small release across the rest of the world but don’t be surprised if it turns up at next years film festivals.
