Looks like we have a lot to be excited for in the coming weeks, Marvelites. Entertainment Weekly has just revealed their next issue cover featuring the ever so charming Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Chris Evans as Captain America standing alongside James Spader’s Ultron, the big bad antagonist in the AVENGERS sequel set for release next year. Minor spoilers ahead!
Better yet, you’ll see the issue is also labelled as ‘Comic-Con Preview,’ and next week, we’re expecting to see all of the cast together for AGE OF ULTRON for the first time, with rumours circling that Whedon himself will be introducing some teaser footage featuring the villainous A.I.
Now, in the comics, Ant-Man, aka. Hank Pym creates Ultron, completely unbeknownst to the implications of his creation. Instead, Screenrant are reporting that Tony Stark/Iron Man will be creating Ultron, an advanced A.I. that will allow him to still partake as an Avenger (following the events of Iron Man 3) without suiting up himself. It seems that Stark’s imagination will take over once more and that other Iron Man armours will be created and featured throughout (the Hulkbuster included) but they will not be piloted by Stark, but Ultron.
Who knows if this means that Ant-Man won’t have any interaction with Ultron in the future of the MCU. It might be nice to have a nod to it; after all, Tony Stark, Hank Pym and Reed Richards all sit down in the comics and discuss the wonders of the universe, artificial intelligence, and subsequently, Ultron, too (though Mr. Fantastic obviously won’t be around in the cinematic equivalent).
Regardless, Ultron is here and he here’s to stay, by quickly realising using his superior intellect and lack of empathy that the biggest threat to humanity is themselves. Whedon had this to say on the matter:
“Ultron sees the big picture and he goes, ‘Okay, we need radical change, which will be violent and appalling, in order to make everything better’; he’s not just going ‘Muhaha, soon I’ll rule!’ He’s on a mission. He wants to save us.”
Aside from some other slightly visible changes on the cover of EW, not much else has been revealed that we didn’t already know. Tell us what you think in the comments section below! What do you think of Ultron?
