Quentin Tarantino is easily one of the most talented, interesting and diverse film makers in the history of cinema. The unique vision and style that he brings to each of his productions, has attracted frequent critical attention ever since his ground-breaking debut in 1992 with RESERVOIR DOGS.
Since then, Tarantino has gone on to direct a range of modern classics such as PULP FICTION, KILL BILL and most recently DJANGO UNCHAINED. In fact, there are very few films directed by the man that have not received great critical and commercial acclaim (with more than a few nods from the Academy). After proving himself as a master of the Crime, Martial Arts, War and Western genres (with a healthy dose of Comedy sprinkled throughout), many have hoped that the auteur will one day flex his directorial muscles in a different direction.
Now it’s looking like those hopeful film enthusiasts may get their wish at some point in the future. Currently, we know that Tarantino is gearing up to film his second foray into the western genre with THE HATEFUL EIGHT, however he may be planning something a bit more interesting after that. Tarantino revealed at last weekend’s San Diego Comic Con that he has an idea for an original Science Fiction movie in mind. You can check out what Tarantino had to say when a fan asked him if he would be interested in making a Sci-Fi flick below:
‘If you had asked me a few years ago I would have said: ‘Nah, not really, I don’t know.’ But I have a little idea right now. It’s a little flower, you know, like a bean sprout, but those tend to grow into stalks. So this is the first time I’ll be able to say ‘maybe.’ It won’t be a spaceship sci-fi, it’ll be Earthbound’.
An earthbound Science Fiction film carrying Tarantino’s humour, visual style, violence and witty dialogue sounds like every film fans dream. However, it doesn’t sound like this project will gain any traction just yet, although maybe he will turn his attention to it after THE HATEFUL EIGHT is released. As a huge Science Fiction fan, it’s hard to find any fault in the idea of Tarantino making his mark on the genre…in fact it downright delights to me even contemplate the notion. Hopefully, that ‘bean sprout’ will develop into a stalk sooner rather than later.
