After another star-turn alongside Angelica Jolie in MALEFICENT, the ever-versatile Elle Fanning is set to play a young Mary Shelley in the year before she wrote Frankenstein – when she was 18 years old.
This project has numerous exciting elements and not just for a great story but it’s being directed by the first female director to come out of Saudi Arabia, Haifaa Al-Mansour. You’ll know Al-Mansour’s work best for the excellent WADJDA (2012), which told the tale of a young Saudi girl and her desire to buy a green bike. It’s an eye-opening film of the struggle to do something so simple but also the strength of conviction and change.
A STORM IN THE STARS is this next project and is a romantic drama from a story by Emma Jensen called Storm. It tells of the passionate love affair between poet Percy Shelley and the 17-year-old Mary Wollstonecraft, the year before she writes that famous book as Shelley. We’re informed that the script will look at the trouble of a first love but also the very important fact that Shelley was already a very exceptional talent as we all still know and continue to learn from.
Amy Baer who’ll produce this indie project via her Gidden Media company had this to say about Fanning:
“Elle is amazingly smart and talented and very much relates to Mary as a young woman. She is going to do something extraordinary in this role that will transition her from a compelling young adult to a formidable leading lady.”
A STORM IN THE STARS is currently securing financing and they’ll be looking to start filming in 2015. We’ll be keeping an eye out for you!
