Gotham is the shinning jewel in Fox’s new fall television series. The show takes place in the city that Batman will one day seek to defend. The show will not feature the DC hero though with the action taking place whilst Bruce Wayne is just a boy. Set in the aftermath of his parent’s brutal murder the story will follow a younger incarnation of future commissioner Jim Gordon, played by Southland and The OC star Ben McKenzie.

It isn’t just Gordon and Wayne that are having the time turned back on them though as famous villains Penguin, The Riddler, Poison Ivy and Catwoman will also feature in much younger guises. Given it’s comic book origins the show has obviously garnered a lot of interest but up until now we Brits were unsure of how we would see the show.

Today see’s that question answered as terrestrial UK channel, Channel 5 have announced that they have the rights to the show. The woman at the head of the acquisitions for the Channel, Katie Keenan had the following to say:

“I don’t think there was a more exciting show at the LA screenings this year – Gotham is a thrilling drama built on iconic characters that fascinate. Channel 5 is delighted to become the home of such a powerful, bold and visually stunning show. Its acquisition proves we continue to be committed to the biggest in US drama.”

This acquisition may come as a surprise to many as the channel have vastly stripped back their imported shows, having controversially cancelled Once Upon A Time (something that must really be kicking themselves about now that FROZEN characters have been added).

Gotham premieres on Fox in the US on September 22nd with Channel 5 to start screening soon afterwards.
