Marvel’s latest sci-fi adventure GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY tore into the UK box-office this week with a fantastic £6.3m in takings since Friday. Disney and Marvel Studios will be delighted at the British performance for the film, which incidentally is also number one around the world with total takings north of $160 million. Not bad for a band of unknown intergalactic misfits!
Fox’s DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, another contender for best blockbuster of the year, still held strong in its third week out there with just shy of another £3m in the bank pushing its total haul in the UK to £23.4m. Further down the list, and this week’s third highest new entry THE NUT JOB took ahold of the school holiday crowd for a modest £666k since Friday, while surprisingly Secret Cinema’s BACK TO THE FUTURE presentations actually made it to the sixth spot on the list with takings of £720k, though tickets for that particular gig come in at around £55 each.
Finally, dance sequel STEP UP ALL IN, the 3D toe-tapper just made it onto the charts at number nine with a £391k weekend.
This week sees the release of the British comedy THE INBETWEENERS 2, which should challenge Marvel at the top of the charts, as well as PLANES 2: FIRE & RESCUE, GOD’S POCKET and WELCOME TO NEW YORK.
