Dakota Fanning has been confirmed to star in the Philip Roth adaptation AMERICAN PASTORAL, announced today by producers Lakeshore Entertainment. She will play Merry Levov, who derails her businessman father’s career by committing terrorist acts during the Vietnam War. Lakeshore President, Gary Lucchesi, said on the announcement:
“The role of ‘Merry’ is an extremely complex part, and I believe that Dakota Fanning will break our hearts with her performance,”
Having announced Jennifer Connelly and Ewan McGregor as Merry’s parents over the last two months the casting looks like it’s picking up speed for this project, due to start filming early next year.
Fanning was last seen on US screens in NIGHT MOVES, the drama thriller also starring Jesse Eisenberg is released in the UK at the end of the month. Also coming up for release in September for the actress is EFFIE GRAY, penned by Emma Thompson.
Roth’s novel won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and taking on the adaptation will be John Romano, who successfully adapted Michael Connelly’s THE LINCOLN LAWYER to the 2011 film of the same name starring Matthew McConaughey. Stepping into the director’s chair is Phillip Noyce, whose previous credits include RABBIT-PROOF FENCE and SALT.
