Turtle Power: Ninja Turtles Blow Away ‘Guardians’ At The U.S. Box-Office

TMNT

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY has managed to bag a whopping total of $175 million in domestic box-office estimates since its August 1st release Stateside, but its $41.5 million in receipts in its second week out there in North America was not enough to retain the number one spot in cinemas. No. The Jonathan Liebesman directed and Michael Bay produced TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES movie exceeded all expectation by banking $65 million in estimates since Friday. This is beyond what Paramount were expecting, and the studio now looks like it may have a potential franchise on their hands. While GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’s haul is not disappointing for Disney and Marvel (its in line with what was expected), it must smart a bit to be bumped off the top spot after just one week.

Other new entries were the disaster film INTO THE STORM which made a respectable $18 million on home soil, and THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY, a film produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey,  based on the novel of the same name, which banked $11.1 million. That film’s budget is around the $22 million mark, so the studio behind it will not be too disappointed with its debut.

Here’s how the rest fared this week.

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, $65,000,000, $65
2. Guardians of the Galaxy, $41,530,000, $175.8
3. Into the Storm, $18,020,000, $18
4. The Hundred-Foot Journey, $11,120,000, $11.1
5. Lucy, $9,330,000, $97.3
6. Step Up All In, $6,580,000, $6.5
7. Hercules, $5,700,000 $63.4
8. Get On Up, $5,012,000, $22.9
9. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes $4,400,000, $197.8
10. Planes: Fire & Rescue, $2,419,000, $52.9
