To say that there has been quite a large amount of hype surrounding superhero franchises lately, would be an understatement larger than the Incredible Hulk’s biceps. With Marvel Studios’ cinematic future mapped out farther than we could even imagine, Warner Bros surprised (and delighted) movie fans earlier this month, with the long overdue announcement of a catalogue of DC Comics film adaptions.
Although the titles of these films remain a mystery, we can quite easily make a few educated guesses as to what they may be. Based on the numerous cameo appearances lined up for 2016’s BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, it’s long been assumed that Wonder Woman and Aquaman will receive their own spin-off films after JUSTICE LEAGUE hits theatres. Jason Momoa has still not been officially confirmed for the role of Aquaman in Zack Snyder’s MAN OF STEEL sequel, however at this point it seems like the worst kept secret in Hollywood. On top of that, Snyder recently called a Radio Station to publically defend the character, which seems slightly out of the blue for a man currently directing a Superman and Batman team-up…
Now we have some fresh information regarding the Atlantean’s cinematic future, and it appears that he will indeed receive his own solo movie at some point in the next six years. Warner Bros. have now hired Will Beall (GANGSTER SQUAD) and Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE), to both pen separate screenplay’s for an AQUAMAN movie. This seems like a very smart move from Warner’s in order to get the best possible adaptation of the character. This could be in response to the public mockery the character is well known for receiving, which is why the studio are keen to prove audiences wrong with a fantastic film based on him.
In my opinion, Johnstad seems the most likely bet for the final screenplay due to his past association with Snyder, and the fact that Jason Momoa fits the mould for a 300-esque AQUAMAN movie. Hopefully we will get some updates on Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s upcoming slate very soon. In the mean time however, make sure to check back with THN for any more DC superhero film and television news!
