The upcoming Batman prequel television series Gotham, is easily one of the most highly anticipated shows premiering this fall. Although most comic book adaptations typically attract large amounts of attention these days, Gotham is a special exception for a number of reasons. Not only was Warner Bros. last Batman-related venture one of the most highly regarded film trilogies of all time, but an origin story exploring the early years of Bruce Wayne, Jim Gordon and his colourful rogue gallery, is uncharted territory until now.
With that in mind, the series has been subject to various bidding wars across the globe, in an attempt to cash in on the hugely lucrative Batman franchise. With Fox snapping up the rights to distribute the show for Warner Bros. (a strange development), it seems that every multimedia distributor is keen to get a finger in DC Entertainment’s pie. Now, it has been announced that Netflix have acquired the rights to stream Gotham after its first season has concluded on Fox. This is an incredibly clever move from Warner Bros and Fox, as worldwide exposure from Netflix will give the series an unprecedented promotional boost ahead of its second season (should it receive one). Below you can check out a quote from Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos, regarding the exciting deal:
‘‘Gotham’ is the most anticipated new series of the fall season and we are thrilled to offer it to our members around the world. The Batman origin story is sure to have massive global appeal so it is fitting that, along with Warner Television, we have created a new model for distributing a show that international and domestic audiences will love’.
Gotham will air on Channel 5 over here in the UK, although we do not currently have an official air date. However, when the show does begin on Channel 5 you can check back on THN for our weekly blog on the awesome-looking origin series starring Ben McKenzie.
