Writer and director of DEAD SNOW 2, one of this year’s best, is gearing up to continue with the HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS franchise. lthough it didn’t blow anybody away in terms of reviews nor box office, it did do enough to warrant at least interest in a sequel. At the end of its run, HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS had grossed $55 million domestically and had a worldwide gross of $170 million. Paramount have commissioned a script by the film’s first writer and director, Tommy Wirkola. Wirkola has now completed the script, but isn’t exactly sure on the future of the production as he spoke to ShockTillYouDrop at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas:
I’ve written the script for it. I’ve given it to Paramount and it’s up to them now. But I don’t know what’s going to happen. Jeremy (Renner) is so busy these days, I don’t know how they’re going to juggle all of that, but it’s up to (Paramount). We’ll see. Hopefully, I’ll get to do another film first. They really liked the script I gave them. The first film was a learning curve for me working in the studio system and the script I wrote for the original was so different. We ended up taking a lot out and altering stuff that first time. I’m smarter now. I tried taking what I learned and still delivered a sequel script that’s an R-rated action film.
Sounds as though it could be an improvement, especially if Wirkola is allowed to go no holds barred. That was certainly the case with DEAD SNOW 2, which was a beautifully crazy and hilarious film. Will Renner be recast? Will HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS 2 make it to the big screen? Personally I hope so, just for more horror related entertainment.
