Your usual review would look at the pros and cons but in this case it’s all positive as the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition is truly stupendous and full of everything good that happened during the celebrations. Obviously, the first port of call for ‘gift ideas’ will be for Whovians everywhere and this is a fine 50th year collection of the world’s longest running Sci-Fi show from BBC Worldwide UK.

On four Blu-rays, you’ll find The Day of the Doctor, Matt Smith’s Farewell; The Time of the Doctor, the Series 7 finale; The Name of the Doctor, and the Eighth Doctor’s (Paul McGann) exciting, and surprising regeneration into John Hurt’s War Doctor; The Night of the Doctor plus the wonderful An Adventure in Space and Time, one of my personal favourites of the 50th anniversary year and one that got the BFI Premiere audience on their feet, with added tears and laughter.

The box-set is presented quite beautifully as well, covered in symbols of Gallifrey and Timelords, it has a basic see-through plastic cover but then you get to choose from Smith, Tennant, Hurt or McGann as your front cover. Each Blu-ray is packed with extras, so there is literally hours upon hours of Doctor Who goodness.

People may niggle over the lack of commentary but when you consider the talent involved, and how busy they’ve been sorting all this out, it’s understandable even if it would have been a worthy extra. The other thing that some may find disappointing is whether you’ve already bought part of this collection over the last year. I hadn’t and so having everything all together is fantastic but due to the way things work these days, it’s possible you might want to check you don’t have one of the discs already. Saying that, buying this little beauty will make you feel great and then it’s a nice gift to someone who doesn’t have one of the episodes.

Among the HD and features, you’ll get a featurette which is an exclusive cut of the read-through of The Day of the Doctor featuring Matt Smith and David Tennant, plus deleted scenes and new-to-DVD cinema trails. There’s also the geek-out that is the entertaining Five-ish Doctors – starring Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and more – and that’s a definite bonus.

If you’re after a great gift for someone you know, and they haven’t bought everything already, this is a beautiful collection that collates everything from a truly celebratory year in Doctor Who‘s history – long may it continue!
