‘Star Trek 3’ Gets Properly Shatnered?

The Captain himself has let the Tribble out of the bag regarding plans for the latest STAR TREK film. It’s still in development stages, but William Shatner just revealed at Wizard World Nashville that J.J. Abrams called him out of the blue with the following suggestion:

I’m calling because the director of Star Trek, the next movie, has had an idea where you might be involved, so I’m calling to find out whether you would be interested.

And the response from the man who famously expressed bewilderment over his non-inclusion in the reboot?

‘It depends on what you do with the character, but I would be delighted…’  They have an idea that… they might want Leonard and myself in it… I would love to do it. But how do you get me fifty years later into the movie? I mean how do you rationalize it. I know it’s science fiction, but even I couldn’t come up with an idea. So that’s the news on that.

While not a surprise the filmmaker in question (Roberto Orci) wants to bring Shatner back into the frame following Spock’s appearances, the prospect of Kirk and his Vulcan chum rocking up alongside Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto is an image to conjure with. Orci, Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne have co-written the script for STAR TREK 3. The movie is expected in 2016, TREK’s fiftieth anniversary year.
