Festive Hamm Joins ‘Black Mirror’

Jon Hamm

In the mood for some bizarre but brilliant casting news? Good. Because Mad Men star Jon Hamm is teaming up with Charlie Brooker for Channel 4’s Black Mirror Christmas Special. And if your brain wasn’t already boggled enough, it transpires Hamm is a fan of the skewed anthology series, which so far has brought us a sexual dilemma for the Prime Minister involving a barnyard animal and Hayley Atwell getting hooked on a dead boyfriend. The actor has issued the following statement:

I am beyond thrilled to be a part of the Black Mirror Christmas Special. I have been a massive fan of the show since its inception… (its) dark humour and intelligent observation of our society and values hooked me deeply as a viewer and I’m honoured that Charlie and the rest of the creative team have asked me to participate in wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas.

High praise indeed, and a sentiment reflected by curmudgeonly mastermind Brooker. Readers of the regular and ebullient press releases for Doctor Who may be amused by these remarks from the Black Mirror creator:

I’m revoltingly happy that Jon, Rafe and Oona are participating in the horrible pageant that is Black Mirror. As far as I’m concerned, their presence is a huge Christmas present that’s arrived early.

The Rafe and Oona in question are Spall and Chaplin, so producers Zeppotron haven’t skimped on the supporting players either. It maybe isn’t such a surprise that Hamm is keen to be involved. He’s carved out an intriguing niche for himself since the exploits of Don Draper wrapped, and has previously expressed his liking for BBC Four hospital sitcom Getting On.

The feature length instalment starts shooting this week.
