Why Your ‘Interstellar’ Journey Will Begin With Google

He’s been the champion of old school film formats, now Christopher Nolan is helping to innovate in cyberspace with the unveiling of a first-of-its-kind multi-platform experience for his forthcoming sci-fi epic INTERSTELLAR. Paramount and Google are joining forces to create a range of interactive experiences for the casual attendee and discerning cinemagoer alike. The first stage (and just launched) is the “Interstellar Space Hub”, which alone boasts an array of features. These include a “Space Hunt”, a “Solar System Builder” Google Play app and resources for audiences relating to the various projection means and film stocks by which the movie will be shown. In an updating of the traditional “test card” system, viewers can offer feedback through the Hub direct to the studio.

Google Play is also “curating” a “Time Capsule” aspect alongside Nolan. The purpose of this appears to be the construction of a LIFE IN A DAY-type film of “the current human experience” comprised of content provided by users. But it’s not all touchy feely stuff. Google Education is to enlighten the youth with classes on the core subjects that underpin the film’s narrative of space exploration beyond our galaxy. Lastly, Google + is playing host to a live cast hangout, where fans’ questions are put to the likes of Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway.

Ambitious plans indeed and a move that will certainly draw praise and also possible concern with Google’s supermarket-style umbrella policy enveloping every aspect of the movie’s message. Starring McConaughey, Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine, INTERSTELLAR will get an advance release in IMAX before landing everywhere on November 7th.
