Crowd funding is a big deal these days, sometimes with entire films being funded through sites such as Kickstarter. When not completely funding films, it can also help push the budget towards an acceptable amount, which may very well be the case for the long awaited SUPER TROOPERS 2. The Broken Lizard comedic classic hit cinemas way back in 2001, and despite a string of fantastic comedies such as CLUB DREAD, BEERFEST and THE SLAMMIN’ SALMON, Broken Lizard have always hinted at a return to their most famous cult classic.
Speaking to US Weekly, one of the members of Broken Lizard, Steve Lemme, spoke about the plans to crowd fund the remainder of the $27 million budget.
The fans have been asking for it for a while, but we were finally able to package everything together. Fox is going to distribute the film, but we needed to raise the money for it, with a minimum budget of $27 million, which we’ve just about raised. There may be a Kickstarter launched to raise the last little bit.
Lemme also confirmed that the film would be a sequel. Early mutterings had the plan to have a prequel set in the 70s, following the fathers of the original SUPER TROOPERS, as the original film was meant to be set in the 70s, but the original $1,260,000 didn’t allow for a period piece.
I think it’s one of the more unique and interesting stories I’ve seen in awhile. But the movie picks up pretty much where we left off in the first one. It’s a few years later. The biggest difficulty was trying to top that opening scene, which so many people have complimented us on. I think we’ve done it.
Hopefully we’ll see the return of Brian Cox as Captain O’Hagan alongside the rest of the Broken Lizard troupe, Jay Chandrasekhar, Erik Stolhanske, Kevin Heffernan, and Paul Soter. But one thing’s for sure, and that’s that we’ll certainly see the return of the most iconic characters.
Everybody who had a moustache in the first one will grow it back. Now the guys who didn’t grow moustaches for the first one want to have a moustache. We’re making them earn it, not sure how we’ll haze them, but they better be prepared.
SUPER TROOPERS is still one those comedies I can always return to, as are all the Broken Lizard films. Hard to believe, but it’s been 5 years since their last film together, so SUPER TROOPERS 2 will be the perfect return. They’ve got by backing.
