If it wasn’t obvious from the desperation oozing from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, Sony would really like a shared cinematic universe. Ever since Marvel stepped up their game and showed the big guys how it’s done, it is now necessary that films are not only single franchises, but expand their scope into new characters and realms. Hell, even THE CONJURING has just received one thanks to ANNABELLE.
But despite all this, and the majority of shared universes being set in the world of superheroes who have shared their comic book pages for many a year, this has to be the absolute strangest. Sony are planning a film titled HOOD, which will be a THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS meets MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE take on the classic tale of Robin Hood. We assume from such comparisons that said film will take place in modern day.
Although that may not be too suprising, the idea is to then give characters such as Little John and Will Scarlett their own solo projects. This seems so odd because I can’t think of a single person that would be interested in this. Maybe a modern day heist caper would be pretty cool, but a whole universe? Disney already have Marvel as well as upcoming STAR WARS movies which will include spin-offs, while Universal recently restarted their Monster Movie universe with DRACULA UNTOLD. Perhaps Sony will include other folk heroes in a modern day setting to team up with HOOD.
HOOD is to be written by Cory Goodman and Jeremy Lott, while Michael De Luca produces. Is this a bonkers decision, or have Sony got a surprise ace up their sleeve? Time will tell, but whatever the case, the pitch was good enough for Sony to shell out $1,000,000 for it.
