As a TV show Twin Peaks prided itself on a general lack of exposition. Part of what made the slow-burning mystery story so compelling was the combination of talent at the top – obtuse writer/director David Lynch and co-creator/writer Mark Frost. There was a sense that the pair balanced each other out perfectly, with the wheels only starting to come off during the second season when Lynch’s lack of interest led to Frost and the team attempting to develop the narrative further. This famously ended as Lynch returned to the fold for the finale and ignored a lot of what was in the script. Now Frost is to reveal what happened in the quarter of a century since we last visited the community in new book The Secret Lives Of Twin Peaks.
Previous publications such as Welcome To Twin Peaks: An Access Guide To The Town have thrown light on the location and the life stories of key protagonists Laura Palmer and Agent Dale Cooper were released to some acclaim. While it’s unclear if The Secret Lives Of Twin Peaks will be a novel or more documentary in nature, it does promise to tell the tale of what happened to the characters and delve deeper into plot elements that were proudly left hanging back in 1991. It also appears to be a case of Frost and Lynch working in tandem again, with the former paving the way for the latter to open a fresh can of “whaa?” when the series returns on Showtime in 2016.
In other Twin Peaks news actress Catherine E.Coulson has revealed that Lynch has contacted her to reprise her role as infamous local mystic “The Log Lady”. Flatiron Books are issuing The Secret Lives Of Twin Peaks in late 2015.
