Ever since Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment finally announced their upcoming slate of superhero films for the next few years, quite a large amount of attention has been given to David Ayer’s SUICIDE SQUAD. The comic adaptation will introduce audiences to a group of imprisoned supervillains, brought together to earn their redemption by working for the government on impossible suicide missions.
It is believed that SUICIDE SQUAD will showcase some of DC Comics’ lesser known characters such as Deadshot, Black Spider, King Shark and Amanda Waller. However, recent reports have indicated that David Ayer (FURY) has re-written the existing screenplay from Justin Marks to include the likes of Lex Luthor and The Joker. It has long been rumoured that Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Tom Hardy are in negotiations to join Ayer’s team of imprisoned antagonists, with Jesse Eisenberg also expected to reprise his role as Lex Luthor from BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE. However, now it has apparently been confirmed that Robbie has indeed signed on the dotted line…as fan-favourite character Harley Quinn!
For those who don’t know, Harley Quinn is the deranged and obsessive girlfriend of The Joker who began as his Arkham psychiatrist before being twisted and seduced by the Clown Prince of Crime. The character originated on the incredibly acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series, with her popular personality and presence quickly spilling over into the realms of comics and video games. Quinn even made an entertaining cameo appearance on the CW’s Arrow earlier this year, which raised the big question of ‘how long before she graces the big screen?’. Of course, we are still awaiting confirmation from Warner Bros. on this (not to mention Smith, Hardy and Eisenberg), but with filming expected for spring 2015 that should arrive sooner rather than later. Casting the WOLF OF WALL STREET star will no doubt spark feverish debate among the fan community, but in my opinion Robbie is the perfect choice for Harley Quinn.
SUICIDE QUAD will be released in theatres on August 5th 2016.
