Ah, so awards season has officially begun. The New York Film Critics Circle dished out their awards today, and the clear frontrunner for the season already looks like it could be Richard Linklater’s BOYHOOD, which took Best Picture, BEst Director and Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette at the prestigious gongs. Being a respected body, the NYFCC, can be an indicator for what’s to come, including Oscar come February (AMERICAN HUSTLE took the top award last year, and went on to receive multiple nominations, though lost out at the Academy Awards to 12 YEARS A SLAVE in their Best Picture category).
The NYFCC also recognised Timothy Spall as Best Actor for his performance in the brilliant MR. TURNER, and Marion Cotillard for THE IMMIGRANT and TWO DAYS ONE NIGHT, while Best Supporting Actor went to the equally talented J.K. Simmons for the upcoming WHIPASH. THE LEGO MOVIE took home Best Animated Film, while CITIZENFOUR won Best Nonfiction Film. Wes Anderson’s THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL won Best Screenplay.
