It’s been clear for a while that Bradley Cooper isn’t interested in being just a movie star. His career of late has taken on a distinct animal theme, with vocal duties on Rocket Raccoon and a Broadway stint in The Elephant Man winning him rave reviews. So Cooper wanting add strings to his bow by directing a movie doesn’t come as a surprise. But which project has caught his eye? Well reportedly he is looking to lens HONEYMOON WITH HARRY, a long-gestating dark comedy he may star in with Robert De Niro. The story concerns two characters affected by the same tragedy – a groom turned suicidal when his beloved dies and his prospective father-in-law, who he runs into when opting to go on the somewhat bleak honeymoon with the intention of ending it all.
This has been in development for a decade – the original wish list of Jack Nicholson and Vince Vaughn gave way to De Niro and Cooper, who did a reading of the screenplay in 2010. Writer Dan Fogelman has been brought in by New Line to buff up Paul Haggis’s original script, adapted from Bart Baker’s novel. Mike Karz is producing with Russell Hollander and Gulfstream Pictures. As the two stars have been looking to collaborate for a third time (after SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK and LIMITLESS) it looks likely De Niro will sign on for Cooper’s potential directorial debut.
