Simon West, seasoned director of modern action movie CON AIR, THE EXPENDABLES 2 and THE GENERAL’S DAUGHTER, will switch genres for a new remake of the horror THE BLOB. An updated version of the film is in the works from producers Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten (DEVIL’S DUE). The original movie was released all of the way back in 1958 with a remake surfacing in the late 1980s courtesy of Chuck Russell and writer Frank Darabont.
The original movie was one of the first motion pictures that Hollywood legend Steve McQueen led.
Here’s the original synopsis:
A drive-in favorite, this sci-fi classic follows teenagers Steve (Steve McQueen) and his best girl, Jane (Aneta Corseaut), as they try to protect their hometown from a gelatinous alien life form that engulfs everything it touches. The first to discover the substance and live to tell about it, Steve and Jane witness the blob destroying an elderly man and grow to a terrifying size. But no one else has seen the goo, and policeman Dave (Earl Rowe) refuses to believe the kids without proof.
“With modern CGI we can now fully realize the potential of The Blob,” West said. “The world I create will be totally believable, immersive and emotionally satisfying. It’s a thrill to introduce an enduring icon to a wider audience and a whole new era of fans.”
