Although the brilliantly satisfying X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, successfully reinvigorated the Marvel Comics franchise. The film came as a slightly bittersweet addition to the 15 year old film series, largely due to the fact that it (seemingly) marked the final appearance of a number of fan favourite characters.
Thankfully however, fellow X-MEN enthusiasts will be happy to learn that this may not be the case. With the upcoming X-MEN: APOCALYPSE apparently focussing entirely on the younger cast in the 1980’s, it was previously believed that there would be no room for old cast members (except for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, of course). But fortunately, fans can rejoice! as Patrick Stewart seems to have heard something different from his undoubtedly reliable inner-circle. The original Professor Xavier has revealed that, while he will not appear in the film himself, his good friend Ian McKellen will be returning for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. This will no doubt be music to the ears of many (including myself), as his particular portrayal of Magneto is fondly remembered by fans and moviegoers worldwide.
It is unknown how McKellen will fit into the 80s-set narrative, given that Michael Fassbender will be portraying the master of magnetism once again. Although, it is most likely a cameo appearance in a flash-forward scene bookending the film, therefore tying in to what has frequently been described as the closing chapter of the ‘First Class’ trilogy. This could also explain what becomes of Lehnsherr in his old age, now that the entire X-MEN timeline has been re-written as a result of DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.
You can read Stewart’s comments on the matter, after being asked if he was due to appear in the film:
‘Very unlikely’
‘But Magneto, Ian McKellen, is certainly going to be in it.’
Meanwhile, Stewart has also revealed that he is currently in talks to star alongside Hugh Jackman, for his upcoming (final?) adventure as the clawed mutant in the forthcoming sequel to THE WOLVERINE. Stewart has previously hinted at further appearances as the older version of Charles in the past, so this isn’t entirely surprising news. However, this would definitely be a brilliant way of attracting interest to what is likely Jackman’s final outing as Wolverine. On top of that, there are plenty of possibilities for interesting character development between the two, given that there is still lots for them to discuss after the events of the previous film (and at that point X-MEN: APOCALYPSE). Not to mention the fact that this will also allow for plenty of other cameo appearances from old favourites, such as Cyclops, Storm and Rogue.
Once again, you can read the quote below:
‘And what I’m very excited about is that we have been talking about a Wolverine movie, which would team Hugh Jackman and myself together. Wolverine and Professor Xavier. That would be a very different sort of “X-Men” from the four movies that I’ve already done.’
X-MEN: APOCALYPSE stars Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Jackman, Evan Peters, Rose Byrne, Oscar Isaac, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner and Alexandra Shipp.
